Manchester-based political theatre collective, Take Back, founded by actor Julie Hesmondhalgh, writer Rebekah Harrison and visual artist Grant Archer, present Take Back Togetherness – script-in-hand rapid responses to the EU referendum result.
From the meltdown in party politics to increases in racially motivated attacks, and divisions in class and age brought into sharp relief, Take Back Togetherness is a call to the creative community, to begin a discussion about how we move forward, positively, together. A 45-minute selection of original work performed at the Royal Exchange – writers include Furquan Akhtar, Alan Harris, Anders Lustgarten and Chris Thorpe.

BRENT ARNOLD is a founding member of Ghost Quartet. In his solo show takes the cello into new realms, incorporating electronics and virtuosic instrumental technique to create vivid sonic worlds. His latest solo album, Night, Exquisite, was called “a journey” and “a beautiful record” by Vice magazine. He created the cello music for the hit show Louie (Louie CK). He has worked with The Antlers, Reggie Watts, Modest Mouse, Sleater-Kinney, Jherek Bischoff, Filastine, Death in Vegas, and Eyvind Kang. He has performed throughout North America, Europe, and Japan. This one off show is not to be missed.

Middle Child and Luke Barnes’ “Some Tiny Plays About How Fucked We All Are” uses verbatim text from the internet to explore the world we live in. From arguments about how many days in a week to Donald Trump poetry and 1D Fan Fiction we explore whether modern life really is rubbish after all.

It’s part-Mock The Week, part-Buzzfeed and part-piss up. Come along for a few drinks, a few laughs and a game of The Great British Bingo Off (complete with terrible prizes).

Josie and Jonny are two lefty comedians who often get told they are preaching to the choir, living in a bubble and listening only to a social media echo chamber. They see themselves as optimists who want to make things better. That’s what they think their politics is. If you think lefties are naïve and immature, or you don’t agree with how they see the world, come along, let’s talk. Let’s try and be kinder to each other. Let’s argue, but without being dicks about it. This is a show about politics and identity and by the end of it; maybe, we will have sorted everything out and can just have a singalong.

Get Yourself Together

One Christmas, Josh was diagnosed with depression and then hit by a car. The following year he was on Job Seekers whilst attempting to balance his sanity and gift buying. A show about being ill and being fit for work. A show about the DWP and being from Bolton. This is a show that explores the thin line between mental health as a clinical and a political issue.

Part stand up, part spoken word and part teenager in his room pretending he’s in a punk band, Get Yourself Together is new show from Royal Exchange supported artist, Josh Coates.

General Management Workshop

We are always looking for ways to demystify the way we go about creating new plays in order to provide support for theatre makers at any stage of their careers.

This workshop is a chance for anyone interested in working in theatre as a General Manager, or in Finance or Administration, to find out more about the profession.

Acting and Directing in the Round Workshop

Join Paines Plough Joint Artistic Director James Grieve in a workshop on working in-the-round. Looking at classic texts and new plays, this is a snapshot look at playing the most exposing, exhilarating and energising of all configurations – the round. Come on down to Paines Plough’s pop-up amphitheatre Roundabout for a quick and dirty guide to 360° theatre. Open to actors, directors and other interested parties.

Paines Plough is the UK’s national theatre of new plays; commissioning and producing the best playwrights, touring their plays far and wide.
