Since 2006, Brian Shimkovitz’s Awesome Tapes From Africa blog has been shedding light on obscure and wonderful sounds from across the continent. As a DJ he bring the blog to life with 2-3 hour sets blending folkloric pop, left-field dancefloor gems and hip-hop bangers he’s collection on African marketplace finds. Travelling from club to festival to DIY space, Awesome Tapes From Africa DJ sets celebrate the music and musicians whose cassettes Shimkovitz has collected over the years.

In March 2016 Billy Bragg and Joe Henry, guitars in hand, boarded a Los Angeles-bound train at Chicago’s Union Station looking to reconnect with the culture of railroad travel and the music it inspired. Winding along 2,728 miles of track over four days, the pair recorded classic railroad songs in waiting rooms and at trackside while the train paused to pick up passengers. On the Shine A Light tour, they’ll be playing songs from the journey, along with favourites from their own back catalogues.

Summerhall Curated, Braw Gigs and NEHH Present…

To mark sound artist and producer Mark Fell’s exhibition in Summerhall’s Machine Shop, Fell curates an evening of sound and music performance – dense, austere and laconic – perfectly suited to the ambience of the Dissection Room. The evening features Fell’s own productions, and solos from composer Carl Michael von Hausswolff and cellist Okkyung Lee and added to the line-up to see us late into the night is a DJ set from Rian Treanor.

Mark Fell is an artist and producer based in South Yorkshire and is half of the duo SND. Okkyung lee is a South Korean cellist/composer/improviser based in New York, who developed her unique language by pushing and blurring the boundaries of contemporary cello and improvisation. Carl Michael von Hausswolff is an artist and composer, using recording technology as his main instrument.

Rian Treanor, signals from the North of England, he re-imagines the intersection of club culture, experimental art and computer music, presenting an insightful and compelling musical world of interlocking and fractured components. Having left a vivid impression in 2015 with his debut 12″ A Rational Tangle, he’s just delivered a scintillating 2nd EP Pattern Damage on The Death of Rave, landing with a resounding 10/10 and album of the month merit in Mixmag and Boomkat. Pattern Damage is a marked step from last year’s debut, hybridizing idiosyncratic footwork and garage hybrids with noisier, pointillist hooks and innovative arrangements owing as much to disco as oblique futurist computer music.

At the age of 28, Texan singer-songwriter Kevin Morby has crammed a lot in. For a time he was the bassist in Brooklynite indie-rock group Woods and then for half a decade the driving force, alongside Cassie Ramone of Vivian Girls, of The Babies. Putting that group on hiatus to concentrate on their solo careers, this year has seen Morby release ‘Singing Saw’, his third album of thoughtful and delicately anthemic indie-rock introspections.

FINAL ALLOCATION ON SALE FRIDAY 5th AUGUST AT 10AM!

Grandaddy formed in Modesto, CA in 1992, and consisted of Jason Lytle, Aaron Burtch, Tim Dryden, Jim Fairchild and Kevin Garcia. The band initially broke through with 1997’s Under the Western Freeway and the NME-praised single “Summer Here Kids.” The band’s sound,” atmospheric electronics meet warped Americana”, crystallized on 2000’s Sophtware Slump, which was met with breathless hype and earned the band “Next Big Thing” status. Tireless rounds of international touring and mountains of fawning press led to 2003’s Sumday, increasing album sales, more touring, more press ,T.V.show appearances, and a slot on the main stage at the Glastonbury festival. The band produced another EP and an album entitled Just Like the Fambly Cat, before disbanding in 2006.

“I turned myself into a myth as a survival mechanism,” enigmatic bluesman Willis Earl Beal once told the Guardian. It’s no pose; eschewing fame, he grew up in Chicago, was court-martialled out of the army, became homeless, went on X-Factor in the US, bounced himself out of it fairly quickly, and hates the machinery of being ‘famous’. As evidenced by last year’s most recent album ‘Nocturnes’, his rich, open-hearted blues and soul is sometimes born of hard times, but never less than unfailingly honest. Dublin’s Myles Manley plays arch indie-pop in support.

Withered Hand is the musical output of Edinburgh based Dan Willson, a feature of the city’s DIY music scene for many years.  Dan came late to singing and songwriting at age 30, at a time of change and crisis in his life.  The resultant material, much of which went on to become his first album Good News, was praised for its depth and startling honesty, and won him unexpected accolades from the likes of Rolling Stone magazine.
